Inquiry - Communication

For Inquiry this term Room 13 are learning about how we keep connected with people throughout the world using different modes of communication.
We brainstormed in pairs questions to ask our parents and grandparents about what they remember about communication forms they used/still use now.
Please answer as many questions as you can so we can discuss the answers and rank modes of communication another way.

1. At the age of 10 what communication did you think was going to up grade? (Liam and McLeod)
2. When did you get your first coloured T.V.? (Grace and Mykala)
3. When you were 10-15 years how did you keep in contact with friends? (Clara, Moss and Harry)
4. When did you get your first computer? (Annie and Scarlett)
5. What was the most common type of communication when you were a teenager? (Timmy and Caleb)
6. How you ever received a letter from a birdie? (Isaac and Sergio)
7. What year did you play your first electronic game? (Robbie and Jamie)
8. When did you get your first cellphone? Was it a brick? (Mackenzie and Joe)
9. How did you keep in contact with family around NZ or the world? (Shelley and Molly)
10. What was the cheapest form of communication when you were 10-15 years young? (Flossie and Millie)

This week you have to design a Wharenui - Meeting House.
See below for the criteria.

1. The wharenui is at least the size of a shoe box.
2. The wharenui is made out of at least 3 recycled materials. Eg twigs, leaves, shoebox, scrap material, unwanted material.
3. The wharenui has an apex roof.
4. The wharenui has one modern design. Eg a glass window, a solar panel, the colour of the front is not traditional.
5. The wharenui has Maori traditional designs.

You need to draw and label your Wharenui design in your homework book first. Collect your materials from home, outside, the beach, or even the bush. Think about how you will put everything together, ie strong glue, sellotape, and wire. Have fun!

Room 13 children had a great time learning new skipping tricks and skipping for fitness most mornings. The amount of money raised by Room 13 is so far more than $400 - awesome effort Room 13!

Term 4 has come around fast. This term will be even busier than term 3! The term consists of the following:

- Fractions, Decimals, Percentages and Ratios

Milo Cricket

We had a great visit from the Milo Cricket Team on Tuesday the 22 of September.
Two of the players came and taught us some skills about cricket. They visited Muritai School to promote the game of cricket. We had a great time, and a super game of non-stop cricket to finish the session off.

WEARABLE ARTS MAKING DAYS:

We had a great time making our wearable art outfits. We planned and prepared ourselves for 3 days of making. A big thanks to our helpful and generous parents who came on the days and/or let us borrow or have material.

Term 3

Term 3 has started with a hiss and a roar. The children look refreshed (and the teachers too) and are happy to be back at school. This term will be a busy one of course. The term consists of the following:

What a load of Rubbish!

Yesterday the Year 5 and 6 Team got together to take a closer look at the waste we were creating each day from our lunchboxes. We were quite shocked by what we discovered. We had a big chat about how we can reduce the waste that is ending up in our bins.

We have decided to take action! An action group has been established to educate us on how we can make our food nude. Next Thursday is going to be our first 'Nude Food Day' where all of us will try to think carefully about what we are putting in our lunchboxes so we can reduce the waste.

Wearable Arts

Term 3 is all about Wearable Arts. For art this term you need to design and create an outstanding piece of art you can wear for our Wearable Arts Show. Its best to start thinking about your piece of art now along with what types of materials you wish to use.

Landscape Art

At the end of Term 2, Room 13 produced quality landscape art. After practising how to blend using paints, we painted out background being a sunset. We views many sunset examples to help us. Then we used a photograph of the Wellington Harbour and drew the outline onto black paper. We cut this out and then stuck this on our page. The last stage was drawing foliage using pastels. This was our foreground. We had a lot of fun doing this.

zone soccer

On Tuesday 19 May, some year 5 and 6 girls and boys were meant to go to an Inter School Soccer tournament at the Petone Rec. Unfortunately, the Hutt Council closed the grounds and due to Muritai School having Cross Country we could not attend to the make up tournament so we made the best of a worst situation and had a school soccer tournament. There were eight team, four year six teams and four year five teams including the Sharks, Eagles, Gold, Blue, Bears, speeders, sting and the flyers. The teams that got into the finals were the speeders and the Muritai Gold team. The speeders are all girls team and the Muritai Gold team were an all boys team. Sadly the girls got beaten 4-1.

Our Awesome Art

These pictures of nikau trees are what Room 13 have been learning about.
Here are the steps we went through to make these pictures perfect
We first drew the out line of our nikau trees
Then we started putting lines to separate the different sections
After that we explored with color, and started to shade different colors together.
When we had finished the color exploring we started drawing the sea, we did some curvy lines to show it was a wave
We then drew korus for the sky.
Once We had finished, We gave it some color by adding blue pastels.

Year 5 and 6 Enrichment

We had a great day today during our first rotation of Thank Goodness its Friday Programme. All the classes were mixed up and we headed off to different classes to take part in lots of exciting things:
Mr Hull: Science experiments. Explanations as to what is happening and why.
Miss Postma: Art – Andy Warhole using the digital cameras. Looking at shading and adding colour
Mrs Hooke: Components of an Orchestra to prepare for a visit to the Vector Orchestra later later in Term. Also learning how to play the ukulele!
Miss Edwards: Drama – Childhood family and friendship relationships using picture books as a motivation. Acting out different scenarios.
Mrs MacPherson: Te Reo Kori – sticks/movements and games.
